The battle of flowers was a parade of floral floats that took place annually in Ventimiglia (Italy) in the second half of June. The first editions of the event, often extemporaneous, date back to the beginning of the 20th century and were generally held to celebrate carnival or the beginning of spring. Widespread today all over the world, an average of ten floats take part in each edition - made inspired by a different theme every year - made up of polystyrene sculptures on which carnation corollas and other material of strictly vegetable origin are nailed with a particular and exclusive technique known as “mosaic flowering”. The number of flowers used is tens of thousands for each subject. The term “battle of flowers” refers to the final moment of this parade in which there is a mutual throwing of flowers between the girls on the vehicles and the public, suitably supplied by small service wagons called bumbardei (“bombers”). What is the “image of flowers”? This work is an attempt to describe the “image of flowers” with one hundred thousand photos, that is, as many as the number of flowers usually used in the battle of flowers. One hundred thousand photos depicting various types of flowers were collected and each photo was turned into one pixel with an average color through a color averaging process. The hundred thousand pixels from the hundred thousand photos compose a single image of the flowers that simulates the “mosaic flowering” typical of the event. |

La battaglia di fiori era una sfilata di carri fioriti che si svolgeva annualmente a Ventimiglia nella seconda metà del mese di giugno. Le prime edizioni della manifestazione, spesso estemporanee, risalgono agli inizi del XX secolo e si svolgevano generalmente per festeggiare il carnevale o l’inizio della primavera. Diffusa oggi in tutto il mondo, ad ogni edizione partecipano mediamente una decina di carri - realizzati ispirandosi a un tema diverso ogni anno - costituiti da sculture di polistirolo sul quale vengono inchiodate, con una tecnica particolare ed esclusiva nota come “infioramento a mosaico”, corolle di garofani ed altro materiale rigorosamente di provenienza vegetale. Il numero dei fiori utilizzati è nell’ordine delle decine di migliaia per ogni soggetto. Il termine “battaglia di fiori” si riferisce al momento conclusivo di questa sfilata in cui avviene un lancio reciproco di fiori fra le ragazze sui veicoli e il pubblico, opportunamente rifornito da piccoli carri di servizio detti bumbardei (“bombardieri”). Qual è l’“immagine dei fiori”? Questo lavoro è un tentativo di descrivere l’“immagine dei fiori” con centomila foto, ovvero tante quante il numero di fiori solitamente utilizzati nella battaglia di fiori. Sono state raccolte centomila foto raffiguranti varie tipologie di fiori e ogni foto è stata trasformata in un pixel con un colore medio tramite un processo di media cromatica. I centomila pixel di centomila foto compongono un’unica immagine dei fiori che simula l’“infioramento a mosaico” tipico della manifestazione. |
