BESTIARIUS XXI
2023 | syntographies | prints on Hahnemühle FineArt Baryta paper | series of 160 images | 46x46 cm; 61x61 cm; 76x76 cm
The Bestiarius XXI series aims to question the relationship between the natural world and the artificial world through the little, if any, veracity of the photographic image. The work is composed of the fictitious documentation of phantasmagorical animal species whose visual memory is preserved and revolves around the fact that nature is still an abandoned territory for the invention of stories, given that today we only know a part of it. The series stages an ambiguous and distorted context populated by an out-of-the-ordinary fauna generated through software trained on the basis of textual inputs which acts as a digital laboratory for the study of DNA, mutations and genetic engineering. The process used, partly human and partly algorithmic, attempts to manipulate the credibility of the photographic document by investigating the not always clear boundaries between reality and fiction, between the natural and the imaginary. We are introduced to strange creatures with a dubious identity, nameless and timeless, at times monstrous, “hybrids” that by their nature cannot belong to any definition, as far from our world as they are close to that of uncertainty. A sort of encyclopedic perspective which, starting from a scientific vision of the world, rewrites reality, revealing a typical condition of our time: the lack of reliability towards visual data (and photography in particular) as one of the most used means of providing evidence. True hybrids, then, or monsters that never existed with exceptional scientific and zoological credibility? Bestiarius XXI - a bestiary among those that arrived later than the times and singular precisely because of its sensitivity straddling two ways of understanding the world - therefore also proposes a reflection on the artifice contained in every device that generates knowledge, focusing on the multiplicity of facets that affect the different disciplines of creation. |
